2000 to July 2002: Independent consultant for law firms and other lawyer groups on legal ethics and professional liability.  

1988 to 2000:  Attorneys’ Liability Assurance Society ("ALAS"); Senior Vice President and Loss Prevention Counsel, 1998 to March 2000. 

1983 to 1988:  Founding partner, Burke, Bosselman, Freivogel, Weaver, Glaves & Ryan, Chicago, Illinois.  1968 to 1983:  Ross & Hardies, Chicago, Illinois (became partner in 1972).  1965 to 1968:  Private practice in Danville, Illinois.

Areas of Practice:

Trial lawyer for 23 years. Substantive areas: antitrust; civil rights; constitutional law; products liability; intellectual property. 

Since 1987 limited to legal ethics, lawyer malpractice, and related disciplines.  Written many articles and given many speeches to large law firms and bar groups on those topics.  Consulted on the telephone with ethics and loss prevention personnel at law firms on several thousand occasions.  Worked with the American Law Institute in its formulation of the Restatement (Third) of the Law Governing Lawyers - as a member of the Members' Consultative Group.  Member of the Advisory Council of the ABA Commission on the Evaluation of the Model Rules of Professional Conduct ("Ethics 2000" project).  Testified before ABA Commission on Multidisciplinary Practice.

Honor:

January 24, 2018: "New York State Bar Association Committee on Professional Ethics Sanford D. Levy Memorial Award Presented to William Freivogel for His Contribution to the Field of Legal Ethics, 2017."


Representative Articles:

Publishes Freivogel on Conflicts, an online publication dedicated to conflicts of interest.  It contains approximately 250 pages of material.


Revised conflict-of-interest chapters for the Sixth, Seventh, & Eighth Editions of the ABA Annotated Rules of Professional Conduct.

Many articles for the ALAS Loss Prevention Journal, from 1990 to 1999, and major portions of the ALAS Loss Prevention Manual.  Other writings include: A Short History of Conflicts of Interest. The Future?, 20 Professional Lawyer No. 2, p. 3 (September 2010); Selected Ethics Issues in Litigation Practice, 72 Tulane L. Number of articles on the interface of information technology with legal ethics and professional liability.  Internet Communications, Part II, A Larger Perspective: originally written for the January 1997 ALAS Loss Prevention Journal.  One of the first commentaries to suggest that lawyers may use the Internet to communicate without the difficulties of using encryption.
